Ultimook Race in Tillamook, OR

Bring a towel (or 2) to this event.

NOTES FROM RACE DIRECTOR:

  • Corn Maze:  This is a reminder to everyone that no one is allowed into the corn maze at any time.   It will be closely monitored and if your kid(s) are found in there you'll be asked nicely to leave early.

  • Wild Flower Field:  This year there is a field of wildflowers  in the middle of the property by the small barn.  This will be a big temptation to go inside and take photos.  Please stay out of this field.  Take photos from the perimeter only.

  • We have a large water feature next to the small barn and field of wildflowers.  It's shouldn't be necessary to mention that climbing over the water feature is a quick way to get uninvited from the Hydrangea Ranch.

  • WELL BEHAVED DOGS ON A LEASH OKAY!!!  Please spread the word, I don’t have time to field phone calls from parents about dogs….”

  • Souvenir t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats will be available for purchase.  There will be a concession stand.  We have a coffee truck.

  • As our business for weddings continue to flourish, it is harder and harder to justify all the impact that the Ultimook Race has on our beautiful flower farm.  Please do your part to help us justify the impact and be sure it is not disrespected in any way by your kids.

EVENT: What better way to kick off the Cross Country season than by participating in the Ultimook Race, held in Tillamook, Oregon?  This course is held on “old school” terrain, providing a balance of challenge and fun for all participants.

Click here for race information and race start times. Please arrive at least one hour prior to start time to ensure everyone has an opportunity to comfortably prepare for the race. Races start at 9:00 AM MS Girls 3k, 9:30 AM MS Boys 3k. Open 5k at 8:15 AM for interested parents, click here to register. High School races start at 10AM and you are welcome to remain at the venue as long or as little as you like.

3K COURSE MAP

GATE FEE & EVENT INFO FROM HOST: See the Ultimook page for admission details ($8/adults, $4/kids, runners free with team entry), t-shirts, concessions, camping, and more.

LODGING: If you are deciding whether to stay Friday and/or Saturday in Tillamook, there are a few Whisper families staying at the Tillamook Bay city RV Park, which offers Yurts and RV sites.

WHISPER RUNNERS: Upon arrival, you’ll walk a quarter mile from the parking lot to the race venue. The Whisper Tent will be visible from the road. WEATHER & WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: Please be sure your child is dressed for the conditions. Wearing layers that can easily be taken off and wrapped around their waistline is advised. A headlamp will be encouraged once the nights begin to fall a little earlier, which is around mid-October. Other items to consider: a towel to dry off and keep your car from getting messy (sometimes the kids track in dirt from runs), and a waist belt that can carry a phone (if your child has a phone) in case they get lost (while it’s happened only twice in nine years, it does happen - for the record, the kids were fine, and they were back at the start/finish before the end of practice).

USATF Junior Olympic XC Association Meet

This page will be updated by September 1, 2026

The content below is from the 2025 Association meet.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Athletic.net Meet Information

The 5k race for the 15-18yo runners is optional at the Association Meet, with automatic advancement into the Regional meet the following weekend only if your child pre-registers for the Association Meet ($1). If your child wishes to run in the Regional meet on November 22, please inform Coach Dave of their interest prior to November 7, so he can process registration correctly (there is a process for registering runners and non-runners). The next (their first) JO meet will be on Saturday, November 22, in Monmouth, OR, at Ash Creek Preserve .

TRAVEL: This event is held Magnuson Park in Seattle, WA, which is roughly three hours from Vancouver (on a good travel day).

FRIDAY

COURSE PREVIEW (OPTIONAL): Coach Dave will be at Magnuson Park at 3:30pm on Friday for a course preview. This will allow us time to check into our hotel room (see Lodging below) and make it to dinner (see Dinner below) on-time. Plan to depart Magnuson Park by 4pm (depending on weather and the timeliness of everyone showing up) so we can get to the hotel for check-in. The course preview should take 30-60 minutes. For those arriving later, try to arrive before 4pm for an abbreviated version of the course.

LODGING (booking links coming soon):

FRIDAY NIGHT TEAM DINNER: Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant, 701 Westlake Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109. We will begin walking to dinner around 6:00pm, reservations at 6:30pm. Please provide your child with $25 for the team dinner, which will cover food, tax, and gratuity. Coach Dave will collect the meal money and pay the consolidated bill at the end of the evening.

SATURDAY

BREAKFAST: See Lodging (Options) notes regarding continental breakfast. Kids should eat food that is consistent with their pre-race routine.

RUNNERS: The start/finish plus team tent/warm up area will be in the Fields 1, 2, 3, and 4 of Magnuson Park, which is also referred to as The Meadows. Plan to meet at the Whisper canopy in within 90-minutes of the start of your race. Bring a light snack and full water bottle. Also, this is a spike-friendly course. If you have spikes, bring them!

Pasta Feed, Foster Teen Gift Drive, White Elephant Gift Exchange, & BYO Gingerbread House

Join us for the Gingerbread House construction/destruction at Clark College in PUB 161 (Fireside Lounge - click here for a campus map.  Bring your unconstructed Gingerbread house to construct, nibble on, and take home!

GIFT DRIVE: The main purpose of this event is to show love toward children in the Foster Care system. We will have a toy and gift drive for Clark County children ages 10-17 who are presently in foster care or state custody. Though gifts for children under 10-years old are appreciated, we are encouraged to bring gifts for children who are in their teens. With several Whisper runners on the team who have been through state custody and/or the adoption process, and my father being adopted at birth, this is something that could really benefit those in physical and/or emotional need.

From Lindsay Griffin, Office Manager at WA St. Department of Children, Youth & Families, “A list of items typically requested from our teens:

  • Wireless earbuds

  • Bluetooth speakers

  • Hoodies Larger sizes (Nike has been requested most of the time)

  • Bath & Body sets/make up sets

  • Electric razor

  • Perfume/Cologne

  • Drones

  • LED lights”

Upon arrival, place your unwrapped gift on the donation table, and then find a place to dine and construct your Gingerbread House.

PASTA DINNER (5:30-6:00pm): Pasta and salad provided..
BYOGBH (6:00-6:45pm)
: Bring your unconstructed Gingerbread House. Costco, Michael’s, Target and Fred Meyer usually have Gingerbread Houses.

CLEAN: 6:45-7:00pm, grab some cleaning supplies and lend a hand!

WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE (7:00-7:30pm): If your child would like to take part, please bring a wrapped <$5 (gift that costs less than $5) so the kids can play Secret Santa (same as White Elephant Gift Exchange?). I will have a few wrapped gifts in case you do not have time to shop for one. Keep it simple. Thanks!
