Ultimook Race

Race: What better way to kick off the 2017 Cross Country season than by participating in the Ultimook Race, held in Tillamook, Oregon?  This course appears to be of "old school" form, in that it will provide a balance of challenge and fun for all participants.

Travel: The location of this race is approximately two hours from Vancouver, Washington.  This meet is quite large, so please account for traffic when you calculate your departure time.

Lodging: If you wish to turn this event into a weekend at/near the beach, you may consider hotel accommodations.  Click here to begin your Google search for hotels in Tillamook.

Whisper Runners: Team uniforms have been ordered and should be ready by this meet.  As with most races, Ultimook will require a running bib to be worn on each runner.  We will plan to meet at 7:30am near the start/finish area to distribute bibs and complete our team warm-up together, pending race start times.

57th Annual Run-A-Ree Race @ Hbay

We can run in either the community race or the middle school race.  This may be a game-time decision and we can discuss the pros and cons as the event nears.  The community race begins at 3pm and the middle school race begins at 5:45pm.  Depending on which race we decide to enter, I ask that runners arrive 70-minutes prior to the start of that specific race.

Practice Location: Pacific Park (1515 N.E. 164th Ave - Vancouver, WA). 

Parking: Using the PDF map as a guide, please park (drop-off) in/at the parking lot between the Off-Lease Dog Park and Extreme Sports Park (Skate Park).  Coach Dave will meet all runners at the large, covered picnic shelter located near the Community Play area.  Training at this location will include running a variety of intervals on the marked (with orange 12" cones) trail.  The outside loop is approximately 1800m, with 1600m being dirt and compact gravel. 

Training Agenda: Final training day together.  We will run a 1k time-trial, a few 200m repeat relays, and then have pancake breakfast at Coach Dave's house.

Here's a bunch of info for Friday's run. Feel free to share what you see as useful. 

Leif Erikson Trailhead on Germantown Road. There is a looped gravel parking lot where we will meet. The trail is an old dirt and gravel road that is mostly flat. There is a bit of uphill in the first half mile, but it flattens out for the rest of our run. There are many trails that intersect with Leif that go up or down the hill, but we will remain on Leif for 100% of our run. Since it is an old road, it is wide and there is plenty of room to run. Leif Erikson Road is popular for runners and cyclists alike, so we will remain on the right hand side of the trail at all times. Even though it is an old road, there are rocks, roots, and potholes on the road, so we will need to be aware of these things while running. White concrete posts mark every quarter mile of the trail, so we will know exactly how far away from the trail head we are while running. There is no water source on or around the trail, so athletes should bring water; they can leave it it my car or run with it. There is a single portable restroom about a quarter mile up the trail. I regularly see professional runners like Eric Jenkins and 2016 1500 meter Olympic Champion Matt Centrowitz running on Leif Erikson for their long runs on the weekends.

Thursday Training - UPDATED LOCATION

Practice Location: Lacamas Heritage Trail - Camas, WA

Parking: The address, 341 NW Lake Rd, Camas, WA 98607, is that of SUP rentals, located at the east end of Lacamas Heritage Trail.  SUP is short for "Stand Up Paddleboards" and is located near the boat launch, child play structure, and restrooms at LHT.  There is plenty of parking and space to drop off your child. 

Training Agenda: Cross-Country conditioning and preparation, or in this case, hills :).  Training should conclude around 10:30am.  Afterward, we plan to go enjoy the Lacamas Lake, which includes swinging from the rope swing and jumping off the dock.  I feel this is totally safe, however, I will be the watchdog from the side.  If your child is not comfortable around water, they can hang with me.  If they wish to play in the water, be sure to pack a towel with them to dry off before they get into your car.  I am happy to place all belongings (water bottles, towels, etc) in my car while we venture out to practice, etc.  Do not hesitate to call or text if you have any questions at all.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR FITNESS JOURNAL.

Practice Location: Park in the Red 1 Parking Lot at Clark College.  We will meet in the O'Connel Sports Center (OSC) in front of the Fitness Center to answer any questions that parentsmay have, and review the workout of the day with the runners.  Summer training from this location will take place at one of the following terrains:

  • 1k loop around tennis courts.
  • Fort Vancouver Park.
  • Dirt Track on SW corner of E. Reserve St. & E. Mill Plain Blvd.
  • Hudson's Bay HS track.

Practice Location: Lincoln High School track (1600 SW Salmon St. - Portland, OR).  Best parking is typically found along SW Salmon St.  We will meet at the bleachers, just off the track near the finish line.   Summer training from this location will take place at one of the following terrains:

Thursday Training

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR FITNESS JOURNAL.

Practice Location:Pacific Park (1515 N.E. 164th Ave - Vancouver, WA). 

Parking: Using the PDF map as a guide, please park (drop-off) in/at the parking lot between the Off-Lease Dog Park and Extreme Sports Park (Skate Park).  Coach Dave will meet all runners at the large, covered picnic shelter located near the Community Play area.  Training at this location will include running a variety of intervals on the marked (with orange 12" cones) trail.  The outside loop is approximately 1800m, with 1600m being dirt and compact gravel.

Training Agenda: Cross-Country conditioning and preparation.

OPTIONAL: Following practice, all runners are invited over for breakfast at Coach Dave's house, which is located within walking distance from the parking lot at Pacific Park.  Please walk over to pick up your child to avoid crowding on the residential street.  Thank you!
