Winter Training 2019
It’s not too late to join the fun this winter, as Whisper Running kicks off another preseason of training in preparation for the 2019 track and field season! Join runners from around the region as we embark on the journey of setting goals, gaining fitness, and boosting self-confidence, all within the realm of working hard with one another! Highlights during the six or nine week Winter Training session will include:
Pace groups for sprinters, middle distance, and distance groups of all abilities led by local high school and college runners.
Sport Psychology curriculum highlighting a topic each week. Topics include Time Management, Visualization, Self-Talk, Performance Anxiety Management, Self-Confidence Enrichment, Nutrition, and more!
Cross-Training using a variety of functional movement based exercises to create a dynamic running body.
Aqua-jogging for continued cross-training, body therapy, and aerobic improvement.
Gaining friendships through meeting and running with runners from throughout the Vancouver-Portland area.
Fun! The most important aspect of training, undoubtedly, is fun! The kids will learn how to how to train, how to run, they’ll learn about intervals, tempos, warm-ups, cool-downs, biomechanics, new levels of intensity of training, and they’ll reach levels of training they never imagined! Who wouldn’t have fun gaining fitness while learning about yourself in a positive, safe, and stimulating environment?
Training begins Monday, January 14, lasting six-weeks for high school runners and nine-weeks for middle school runners. Training days are Monday’s, Thursday’s, and Saturday’s. The tentative schedule for the Winter Training Session will be:
Monday’s at Clark College from 6:00-7:30pm. On February 4, February 11, and February 25, we will meet at the Propstra Aquatic Center from 6:15-7:45pm for a 30-minute run and 60-minutes of aqua jogging.
Thursday’s at McKenzie Stadium from 5:45-7:00pm for the first six weeks of training. The final three weeks (February 28, March 7, and March 14), we will meet at Shahala Middle School from 5:45-7:15pm.
Saturday’s at Clark College from 9:00-11:00am.

the work we do
In order to better serve the needs of the vast abilities within preseason training, interval groups are formed based on the runners current fitness level. This winter, we will have training for both sprinters (100m-400m) and distance runners (400 to 2-mile), with subgroups within the disciplines. Training sessions are for all abilities, from beginners to advanced.
Running comes in many forms, and whether you are a beginner or a seasoned vet, every runner can benefit from cross-training. Cross-training is an essential part of a runners general fitness, strengthening muscles all around, and especially those muscles essential for high level performance. We use a variety of modalities, from aqua-jogging and water-based exercises, in addition to the use of ropes, kettlebells, dumbbells, and body weight exercises. These are all in place for the benefit of creating a more athletic and strong runner.
The social element of whisper
Two important elements in training should always include being fun and being social. Whisper aims to create an environment for growth beyond being a runner, by cultivating a supportive and safe place for runners to make friends, be themselves, work hard, engage with others, accomplish goals, and have fun! The Ferris Beuller mantra of “Life moves pretty fast…” is on full display at Whisper, where accomplishments and friendships are made on a regular basis.
