Whisper Running offers two types of training for the Summer of 2017. The first is type of summer training is the Summer XC Conditioning, which consists of nine weeks of group training with over 30 middle school and high school runners from the Vancouver-metro area representing over 15 different schools. Be sure to check out the calendar page for group training times and locations. The next type of summer training is the One-On-One sessions with Coach Dave Caldwell. These are private sessions aimed at dialing-in on a runners most challenging areas, whether it is running form, general conditioning, psychological challenges, or other. The foundation of Whisper Running is built upon two key principles. The first is the utilization of Psychological Skills Training, or PST. PST practice uses Behavior Change Theory to cultivate autonomy and self-confidence in ones abilities. When the tools within PST are used successfully, runners feel a greater sense of control within their running, be it speed, endurance, or an emotional tolerance of discomfort. Ultimately, the practical implementation of PST provides both emotional and physical growth. PST tools such as Goal Setting, Visualization, Anxiety Management, and Concentration provide runners the ability to harness their physical, mental, and emotional energy into a finite task, in this case, running. Dialing into this area of the brain, where one can focus intently on defined goals, then accomplishing these goals, can provide a self-efficacy within running like nothing else. This approach, helping to develop ones self-efficacy, can also help increase ones confidence in other important areas of life such as academics, family, relationships, and general attitude and performance.
The second of the two key principles is the training part of Whisper Running. Meeting kids where they are at, regardless of their current ability and fitness level is an important component of creating a better runner. Every runner is truly built a little different than their peers, so considering posture, biomechanics (form), genetics, fitness levels, goals, and mental and emotional maturity are vital to the success of each person. Each of these factors play a pivotal role in the development of a runner, which further supports the need for a keen eye to kinesiology (proper running form), maturation, and progression.
youth & middle school runners
Whisper Running understands cross-country and track and field seasons at the youth and middle school levels are simply too short to truly see what children are capable of. Some schools in the Portland-Vancouver area lack the resources to have a running program or hire enough qualified coaches to reach all of their athletes. This leads to children being under-served and their potential as runners unknown or underdeveloped. The developmental years are a critical time for physical and emotional maturation. Whisper Running programs and practices are conducted in a manner which creates a skill-challenge balance to help each runner reach their maximum running potential. This is done in a positive, safe, supportive, and fun atmosphere.
high school runners
Runners at the high school level have four solid years to maximize their ability within the sport of running. Whether a runner is simply trying out running for the first time, transferring from a different sport into running, or is a seasoned veteran at their school, Whisper Running provides a challenge for all runners, at all levels. Additionally, one of the best parts of training with Whisper, is the opportunity to train with runners from all around the Portland-Vancouver area. In doing so, you’ll create a common bond in Whisper Running, and potentially a running partnership for years to come.
