Wednesday - ESD MS District Course Preview/Shake-out

Training Agenda: We will spend time reviewing the Evergreen School District Middle School XC Championship course.  We will begin by warming-up on the course, perfornming drills, then strides along various parts of the course to feel areas to focus, or shift focus during the race.  The idea is to practice (mental rehearsal) how we'd like to perform on the day of the race.

Trico 1A League Championships

Race: This is the Trico League Championship meet, where last year we cleaned house (Whisper 29, La Center 51, Wind River 63), placing first of fives teams.  Let's do our best to earn back-to-back championships!

Start Time: The middle school and club race will begin at 3:40pm, with the boys and girls running together.  High school race to follow. 

Itinerary of sorts: Coach Dave will register all interested runners.  Try your best to arrive as close to 2:45pm as possible, but if you cannot get your child there until 3:15pm because of school, that is okay, just let Coach know.  We will plan to meet at a picnic table near the start/finish area to distribute bibs and complete our team warm-up together.

USATF Junior Olympic XC Association Meet

Race: The USATF Junior Olympic pursuit to Nationals starts here at the Association Meet. 

Start Times: Click here for race information and race start times.

Travel: The location of this race is Woodland Park, just north of Seattle.

Lodging: In the past we have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, which is a few miles from the park. There is also a pool, so be sure to bring a swimsuit!

Dinner: There are several options, but in the spirit of distance running, we be having dinner at the Tutta Bella.  Click here for the Tutta Bella website/menu/location.  This venue is less than a mile walk from the hotel.

Whisper Runners: The start times have not been posted yet, but we do plan to meet at the Whisper canopy in Woodland Park within 90-minutes of the start of your race.

USATF Junior Olympic XC Regional Championship

Race: The USATF Junior Olympic Regional Meet. 

Start Times: Same as the Association Meet (once I know, it'll be posted)

Travel: The location of this race is Franklin Park, in the heart of Yakima, WA.

Lodging: From Coach Erik Mickelson of Yakima, "I would strongly recommend you reserve them early as the state volleyball tournament is in Yakima that weekend and they will be filling up fast."  He recommended Expedia, but I will look into getting a block of rooms.

Dinner: There are a few options, but perhaps Zesta Cucina would work?  Please review the menu for options, pricing, and allergy substitutes and let Coach Dave know if there is an issue.  If so, please provide a suggested alternate restaurant.

Whisper Runners: The start times have not been posted yet, but we do plan to meet at the Whisper canopy in Franlin Park within 90-minutes of the start of your race.

Ultimoook Race in Tillamook, OR

Race: What better way to kick off the Cross Country season than by participating in the Ultimook Race, held in Tillamook, Oregon?  This course appears to be of "old school" form, in that it will provide a balance of challenge and fun for all participants.

Wednesday - UPDATED to Lacamas Heritage Trail (East Side)

Who: Registered runners preparing for the 2018 Cross-Country season.

What: Easy 20-30 minute run.  There is a new bridge that has become quite the hot spot in Camas during the summer, where kids jump from and into the water below.  This is located between Round Lake and Lacamas Lake.  The jump from the bridge is about 10'-12' high and many runners from Whisper have already taken the plunge from this bridge at some point during the summer.  We will be taking a team picture on the bridge between 10-10:30am, so please wear your Whisper shirt (to be distributed prior to the picture).  Parents are encouraged to stick around and keep an eye out for safety reasons.

When: We will meet at the east end of Lacamas Heritage Trail (see address below) and depart for our run at 9:15am.

Where: The address, 341 NW Lake Rd, Camas, WA 98607, is that of SUP rentals, located at the east end of Lacamas Heritage Trail.  SUP is short for "Stand Up Paddleboards" and is located near the boat launch, child play structure, and restrooms at Lacamas Heritage Trail.  There is plenty of parking and space to drop off your child.

Monday - Shahala MS

Practice Location: Shahala Middle School (601 SE 192nd Ave. - Vancouver, WA).  The track is located in back of the school, so you'll want to park either at the west (front of the school) parking lot and walk your child to the track, or south parking lot and walk your child to the track.  Training from this location will take place at one of the following terrains:

  • Shahala MS Track
  • Vandervort Neighborhood Park
  • NW Lake Rd. (hill repeats)
  • Lacamas Heritage Trail
  • Fisher Basin Park (located on same grounds as Shahala)

Parking: Using the PDF map as a guide, please park (drop-off) in/at the parking lot between the Off-Lease Dog Park and Extreme Sports Park (Skate Park).  Coach Dave will meet all runners at the large, covered picnic shelter located near the Community Play area.  Training at this location will include running a variety of intervals on the marked (with orange 12" cones) trail.  The outside loop is approximately 1800m, with 1600m being dirt and compact gravel.

Wednesday - WSBSP

Who: Registered runners preparing for the 2018 Cross-Country season.

What: Cross-Training is an integral part of training theory within Whisper Running.  Wednesday's we will devote to one hour of water-based exercise, and a second hour will be devoted to functional movement training.  Aqua-jogging belts (or another form of flotation device) will be provided for all runners/swimmers.

When: Please arrive by 8:50am.  Runners will need a modest swimsuit, towel, and a set of warm clothes to put on afterward.  Upon arrival, we will  meet in the gymnasium for a brief team meeting, and then divide into groups.  One group will remain in the gym, while the second group goes into the pool.  At 10am, groups will switch rooms for the remainder of the workout time.
