“Thank you for making me faster!”It’s a phrase shared between peers at the end of practices to show gratitude, humility, and appreciation. It’s a form of iron sharpening iron, where the physical strain of practice takes ones psyche to another level, questioning then building resilience for the season of racing that awaits. This was a taste of Winter Training at Whisper Running, where runners from around Clark County gathered to train alongside one another. To be surrounded by so many hard-working, driven, mature, goal-centered humans is a an exciting time. For six weeks, a rising tide raised all ships, where runners felt and saw a vision for who they can become as a runner, a human, and a champion. And while it’s easy to paint a picture full of roses, the reality is that racing can be a humbling experience. I am reminded of the Boston Marathon logo of the unicorn, which encourages the pursuit of ambitious goals, even the ones that could wind up being just out of our grasp. While some goals may never come to fruition, letting the sting of unfulfilled objectives bring runners back to the oval, refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready. Congratulations to all of the runners who trained with Whisper over past year or years, who made it to districts, and beyond, and especially to those who stood on the podium at the Washington State Track and Field State Meet. What a moment to remember, and chase again. Next Up: Summer Training!
