Staying in the game through injury

In May 2025, I ran into Matt, the brother of a well-known high school coach in the Portland community, both of whom were very talented high school and collegiate runners. From an outlook at Hayward Field, I could see Matt talking below with a fellow coach. Matt happened to be wearing two post-surgery removable boots, and having a sense that we had both experienced the same thing, I approached him with one question: “Haglund’s?” Matt immediately replied, “You are the first person to guess it right on the first try. Offseason Work = Positive Returns

The 2025 season commenced in Tillamook, OR, at the Ultimook Race, where both teams took home the victory. This race was extra special, as no other team has ever won both boys and girls middle school 3k in the same year, and Whisper has now done it twice - 2019 and 2025. The 2019 teams were loaded, but the 2025 team is young, eager, and cohesive, making them a quiet contender in the pursuit of a run at Junior Olympic Nationals. However, teams from Seattle, Idaho, and Portland are just getting started, were the powerhouses of 2024, and will seek to retain their spots at the top of the Pacific Northwest Region. Will this be the year the young Vancouver-based team earns their trip to the national stage?
